“Some men lust for women and others lust for gold, but I only lust to please the gods.”
This is our Floki inspired sharp hatchet, used by the very popular character Floki in the TV series Vikings. It is highly functional and made from high carbon steel, hardened head, edge polished with the rest left blackened. The haft is made from English ash that is burnt black and leather wrapped in a black grip. It's hafted from the bottom for the purpose of woodcutting, but not hafted for throwing.
Burning hafts black is an old blacksmiths trick to smooth the handle and prevent getting blisters whilst they hammer all day. It wraps the wood in a layer of carbon that's highly resistant to mould, insects, water and even fire. It also hardens the wood, making it less likely to crack or splinter. This process is called "Charring" - burning and rubbing in oil whilst the wood is still hot/warm.
